How Chemical Peels Enhance Beauty

By Elen Hanszen

We all want smooth, unblemished skin and this feeling increases as we grow old and start seeing signs of aging such as fine lines, wrinkles and age spots. As the signs of aging become more noticeable, a person can start to have less confidence in their appearance. A skin peel is a good solution for those who are having issues that are a result of their aging appearance.

A good way to rejuvenate skin is the use of a chemical skin peel, to enable the skin to look younger. Chemical peels will help you reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on your skin. The outermost part of your skin sometimes has an accumulation of dead skin cells, and a skin peel will remove these, reducing wrinkles and making it appear brighter.

A skin peel will also help to reduce some other types of skin issues like liver or age spots and can reduce the prominence of freckles also. Softer, smoother looking skin will result after a patient goes through the process of getting a chemical peel. Chemical peels also have a very positive effect on people suffering from acne; they can reduce the inflammation and pimples in acne sufferers.

Chemical peels are a one day process, with options for touch ups, but a product for skin like a cream or lotion will have to be used for a long period of time, with multiple daily usage required. Many plastic surgery solutions are permanent and more invasive for the patient, and a peel is nowhere close to that level. Chemical peels are much more than subtle adjustments to skin moisture levels or promises to strengthen collagen like some over the counter creams offer.

Chemical peels are pretty self explanitory; it actually removes layers of skin to expose the underlying cells and causes new cells to grow. New, blemish and wrinkle-free skin will cover up and reduce the look of wrinkles and other kinds of blemishes.

During the whole process and pre and post procedure, there is no need for pain management because a chemical peel does not cause pain to patients. Typically, the patient will return for more superficial chemical peel treatments every second week or once a week, for a total of about 6 times for optimal results. A peel has very minimal risk when it is more superficial. For a few days after a skin peel, the side effects are still noticeable. However, some individuals may experience hyperpigmentation, or changes to the look and colouring of the skin afterwards. The capacity for skin to produce pigment is sometimes affected after a deeper skin peel.

In the week prior to a skin peel of any depth it's usually recommended that patients clean the skin regularly to reduce chance of infection and the use of moisturizer is recommended to promote even results and fast healing. Often a doctor will recommended applying sunscreen daily prior to the procedure.
